Not sure why it says private but there were almost 10-15 people when I visited. A short walk from the parking to the falls, we were here before 9 am and the parking lot was almost full. 15 mins from downtown Galena, nothing ordinary but if you’ve sometime would recommend stopping by.
I had visited this location years ago and wanted to show it to my husband. However, it seems that even though it is a beautiful place for a quick stop...you cannot unless you are a member of the golf course that is within The Galena Territory.
Go here. Just do it. Breathtaking views. Quick walk to the falls. Very cool rocks and scenery. I just wish kids respected it more. There were a few kids throwing rocks trying to hunt fish, just acting out. Other than that we hung out for awhile loved it. There is a sign if you put your phone on the ledge and use the timer you'll get great photographs. Enjoy and be kind to nature. :)
I need to preface this review with a note: this waterfall is tucked away within the Galena Territories, which is private to property owners and their guests, so hopefully you have the opportunity to see it by staying in a nearby property.
I visited with my family in late March, mid-morning during a fairly clear sky. There was heavy water flow due to recent rains.
These falls are very accessible to all ages and abilities. Wear hiking shoes or something you don't mind getting dirty as it can get a little squishy as you get close to the falls. There's also large rock steps that you can optionally walk on, which require a little more grip when wet.
I was impressed with the close proximity the viewing area is to the falling water. At some angles you can see the water mist over your head. The dual falls are quite deserving of their name as the rushing water makes a thundering sound as it drops from the rocky edge above.
I hope you can enjoy this site and catch it during heavy flow.
**Please note the falls is on private property**
Sat here by myself to just take in the amazing sounds of the falls. Beautiful and easily accessible
I enjoy visiting Thunder Bay Falls. It is a private waterfall area that is open to residents and guests of the Galena Territory. There's a parking area and a very short walk to the falls. Because it is a private waterfall area, Galena Territory Security could be looking for guest parking passes and/or resident stickers. There is no picnic tables or benches to sit on, but there are a few rocks if you wanted to sit and relax and enjoy the water or have a small picnic.
Pretty scenery however there hasn’t been any rain lately so the waterfall was not active. A local told us that it’s typically active after it rains.
This little spot was a lot busier than I’d expected, but didn’t feel crowded. We were very excited to see so much nature - otters, frogs, dragonflies, butterflies, crawfish, fish, turtles, wildflowers - very cool little respite.
The funny thing is - I came across this waterfall 14 years ago in 2008. There was a lot more water then, but it was still just as beautiful.
There are four “layers” - from the street, from the upper platform, the lower part platform, and the bottom level - there is no swimming allowed though.
We were blessed to have a major storm roll through on our last day. Big difference at the falls!!! 😱
